Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and its largest city and port. It is located on the southern shore of the Rio de la Plata (also known as the River Plate), on the southeastern coast of the American continent. Strongly influenced by European culture, Buenos Aires is sometimes referred to as the "Paris of South America". Buenos Aires is also a place for city tours for keen walkers: from the historic Plaza de Mayo dominated by the salmon-coloured Government House (Casa Rosada) from whose balcony Eva Peron addressed the masses, the Avenida de Mayo leads past the art-nouveau Cafe Tortoni where the intellectual elite of the day still gather to drink coffee and Legui, across the broad 9th of July Avenue and along the leafy streets to the monumental Palace of Congress. Turning right along Callao Avenue, crossing the busy and glamorous shopping avenue of Santa Fe, you eventually reach the Recoleta area. With its broad esplanade of cafes, the famous cemetery where the country's ruling elite are buried and a contemporary art and design centre to rival that of London or New York.
Buenos Aires today offers tourists and locals a broad choice of opportunities to enjoy its artistic and cultural heritage; its 57 museums house permanent and visiting collections of classical and contemporary art while the Colon Theatre is itself a living museum, displaying the costumes and memorabilia of performances past and host to the world's top orchestras, ballets, and opera companies of the present. Buenos Aires is also a city of plazas and parks, a city of open spaces where the portenos love to walk, meet for coffee and browse among the stalls of the markets that are always to be found on weekends in the larger squares. We suggest making a day of three very different open-air markets: the art market at the colourful Caminito street in La Boca, followed by a browse among the antique stalls of San Telmo and finishing with a stroll around the stands of handicraft articles in the sloping gardens of the Recoleta.
