From Jujuy to Atacama
-
10
Days |
|
|
|
This 10 day itinerary offers a journey of breathtaking natural beauty, though some of the richest cultural regions of Argentina and Chile, where Pre Columbian heritage merges with Inca and Spaniah colonial legacies. Explore Salta, Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, declared World Natural Heritage by UNESCO. Enjoy the hospitality of Hosteria Colome and taste the wines produced at the highest vineyards of Argentina. Experience the breathtaking beauty of the high altitude deserts and salt lakes of San Pedro de Atacama. We fly to Salta; Traveling to Argentina's North is a voyage to a land of shades and deep contrasts. It is, no doubt, the region with more "historical" and "traditional" life, a place where pre-Columbian civilizations converge with a colonial past and a strongly-rooted folkloric present. Jujuy, with its wild nature, its villages held in time - such as Purmamarca, Tilcara and Iruya, among other - the mysticism of Coyan customs, the Salinas Grandes (Great Salt Pans) and Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca Gorge), one of the region's most mysterious places, a desert that rises to the clouds through uneven colorful mountains. We Leave Argentina in our 4x4 vehicles and we cross the border and enter Chile by Paso de Jama. Stop at Purmamarca, an attractive village with its "Cerro de 7 Colores" (Seven-Color Mountain). Drive along Cuesta de Lipán, enjoying its amazing views and visit to the Big Salt Planes. Arrive at San Pedro de Atacama; It is extreme in its variety, isolated, beautiful. Its beauty resides in the texture of the land, the starkness of the sky and in how life has found a way to conquer the desert. Atacama is a lunar landscape in places, lush river canyons in others. In some parts, rain has not touched this parched land for the past three hundred years.

We enjoy a short visit to the City of Salta and head to San Antonio de los Cobres village. We start our 4x4 trip to discover the “Andean Circuit” and the Puna (high plateau). This area is over 4,000 meters above sea level and it amazes people with its snow-capped peaks, its silent
volcanoes, its wide seas of salt, its abandoned mines, its lagoons, and its vicuñas against the skyline… All these things come together to create an almost unreal atmosphere. One of the most interesting aspects of this remote
region is the culture of its people, who, from the pre-hispanic times, could adapt to the hard conditions. Little towns like San Antonio de los Cobres have kept the Incas’ traditions. We continue to Tolar Grande, is a small village situated in La Puna at 380 km from Salta City. It is surrounded of mountains that go from the 3700 to 6000 metres.
This is an extremely arid place where we can see some of the most important elevations as Tuzgle Volcano of 5400 metres and Socompa Volcano of 6030 metres between others. It is really amazing visiting the town and see the
landscapes which is not so known by the general of the tourists. We will be travelling around highest sandbanks that were formed by the erosion of the time, one of the most famous is “El Arenal” and also we will have views of most of
the big salt planes as the “Salar de Arizaro”. Once we arrive to Tolar Grande we will stop at the refuge built by a french. This is a small country refuge, without any luxury but you will feel the experience of sharing your time with the friendly people of Tolar.
