The 12 of February of 1541 Pedro de Valdivia founded the City of Santiago de Nueva Extremadura. The Central Area of Chile is where most of the economic, administrative and cultural activities are centralized. The best ski centers are a one hour ride away from Santiago: Farellones, El Colorado, La Parva and Portillo.
South of Santiago is the fertile Central Valley with its big fruit plantations, one of Chile's most important and successful export products. This area also produces great wine. The most famous vineyards, plantations and cellars can be found in the Maipo, and Colchagua valleys, as well as around the cities of San Fernando, Curicó, Talca, and Chillán. Visit them to learn about expert wine-making and, of course, the visit isn't complete without wine tasting with the guidance of professionals.
Beautiful beaches with many traditional resorts are only a short ride away. Santiago is only 1½ hours from Viña del Mar - the “Garden City”, and Valparaíso, one of the most picturesque ports, beloved by artists. Its houses seem to be sliding from the top of the surrounding hills right into the sea. Not far from here is Isla Negra, where one of Pablo Neruda’s famous houses is situated, with his figurehead collection, as well as 1000 other curious objects. In the middle of the Pacific ocean, we find Easter Island, or Rapa Nui. Being one of the most isolated parts of land on this Earth it offers unique differences in culture and landscape.
